to determine the specific optical density generated for the solid materials

Smoke box

The smoke box equipment is designed to evaluate the specific optical density of smoke produced by solid materials and assemblies installed in a vertical position inside an enclosure, with or without the use of a pilot flame.

This method is applicable to all plastics, but other materials such as rubbers, textile coatings, painted surfaces, wood and other materials can also be evaluated.

The test is mainly used in R&D and in fire safety engineering of trains, ships, etc.
